Musicians in the Instrumental Music Program will need to be proficient in the following list of exercises in the (concert keys) of: F, Bb, Eb, Ab, C, G, D, A, E, Db, B, and Gb:
- Velocity Studies
- 2 Octave Scale
And for extra credit, additional exercises include:
- Natural Minor Scales (mandatory for seniors)
- Harmonic Minor Scales
- Melodic Minor Scales
- Blues Scales
One must also be able to play the chromatic scale, keep a steady pulse between 120-140 beats per minute, use proper instrumental technique and posture, have superior tone in all registers, have superior intonation and articulation, and be able to properly sight read instrumental selections in class. Only a director or assigned student may check off items, and all notes must be correct. Some students will be randomly sampled at the end of the grading period. DO NOT LOSE THE CHECKOFF SHEET GIVEN TO YOU IN CLASS! IT IS THE ONLY RECORD OF YOUR PROGRESS! For the first semester final, only exercises in F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and C must be proficient.
Remember, all exercises must be played in the concert key.
